Lauren Edwards was leading roughly 150 Marines through Iraq when her convoy came under enemy fire. The young captain suddenly had more than a mission to complete. She had Marines to bring through it. Edwards was a Marine engineer officer commanding Engineer Support Company, 8th Engineer Support Battalion, supporting operations as American forces advanced through Iraq. During one convoy movement, her Marines encountered enemy fire. Edwards responded from the front. Rather than allowing the convoy to fragment under pressure, she helped organize the Marines' response, maintained control of the formation and directed her unit through the encounter. Her actions earned her the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal with Combat “V”, recognizing valor while directly participating in combat. But Iraq was only part of her story.
