Somewhat true, FYI. A 1393 law under Richard II made alehouses display a sign so the ale-taster could find them, and pictures worked for people who couldn't read (and as an address before street numbers). But the names mostly came from heraldry, royalty, religion and trades, and the sign just illustrated the name. Red Lion = heraldry, Royal Oak = Charles II hiding in a tree, Cross Keys = church links. Weird ones like Pig and Whistle are often garbled over time, or just folklore.

When I went to Colmar they told us all the buildings were painted specific colors because people couldn’t read like red was butcher and yellow was bakery, thought that was neat

They also name them if there next to something for example the railway if it’s near a railway or the boat n horses cuz it’s near a canal

my fave pub name ever was the rats castle in st albans named after the toll house that used to be there, after it stopped being a toll house it fell into disrepair and rats moved in and chewed their way through the thatched roof, giving it the nickname the rats castle! Its recently been done up and renamed the old toll house...such a downgrade...
