Looking at the amount spent by consumers is misleading because the reason the numbers are high is the high prices, not the amount of good and services being purchased. In fact, consumers may actually be purchasing FEWER goods and services but paying more for them, thus generating a total amount spent that does not reflect the decline in the quantity of goods and services purchased.
