@author_matthewflagler: Canada is sitting on enormous deposits of critical minerals the world increasingly needs. Lithium. Nickel. Copper. Rare earths. Sounds like a pretty good position to be in. But owning the rock isn’t the same thing as owning the opportunity. A huge amount of the economic value in critical minerals comes after they’re mined — through processing, refining and manufacturing. And if Canada simply digs them up and ships them somewhere else, we’re capturing only part of that opportunity. So what would it take to keep more of that value here? Canada is investing billions in its critical-minerals strategy and trying to expand domestic processing capacity. But competing with established global supply chains isn’t cheap — which raises some important questions. If taxpayers help finance these projects, what should Canadians receive in return? And if critical-mineral development happens on or near Indigenous territories, should Indigenous communities increasingly become owners, rather than simply workers or stakeholders? In Episode 4 of Beyond the US: Building an Independent Canada, we’re looking beyond what Canada has underground — and asking who captures the wealth after we dig it up. Because finding something valuable is one thing. Making sure Canada benefits from its full value is considerably harder. #canada #criticalminerals #mining #jobs #economy

Need to take a good look at Norway and see if we too can capitalize on a national industry.

We mine more today than we did 50 years ago, however metal processing within Canada has decreased by >80% through this same period. The Federal Government did not support companies with developing cleaner technologies for metal processing. So the miners started offshoring metal processing where environmental regulations are less stringent. The Federal Government needs to partner with the mining industry and academia to develop cleaner technologies for metal processing.
