Just as a human judge who lets a violent criminal walk free without consequence is considered corrupt rather than merciful, a truly good and holy God cannot simply ignore or excuse evil. True justice requires that moral wrongs have a real accounting. Sin is not just breaking an arbitrary rule on a celestial checklist; it is an assault on goodness, truth, and love, and it inflicts real damage on people and relationships. Because God is the source of all goodness, rebelling against Him damages the very fabric of existence and demands a correction. Even outside of religion, human beings instinctively demand justice when terrible things happen in the world. Christianity argues that this universal moral intuition reflects the standard of a moral Creator: if objective evil exists, there must be an objective standard of goodness, and therefore, a reckoning for wrongdoing. While sin demands a penalty, Christianity emphasizes that God did not leave humanity to face that punishment alone. Instead of sweeping evil under the rug or leaving us to pay the ultimate price, God stepped into human history in Jesus Christ to absorb the penalty of sin Himself. Authentic love and moral agency require the genuine freedom to choose. God did not desire sin, but creating humans capable of love inherently meant creating beings with the capacity for rebellion; blaming God for human choice is viewed as confusing freedom with coercion. Spiritual death is not as an arbitrary penalty or torture device invented by God, but as the natural, logical consequence of turning away from God, much like stepping away from the sun results in cold and darkness.
