Private Sam Watkins of the 1st Tennessee tells it himself. Tomorrow, October 8, marks 164 years since the Battle of Perryville — the biggest, bloodiest battle ever fought on Kentucky soil. Watkins was a private in the line, and he opens his account of the day with a disclaimer worth keeping in mind: "I was simply a soldier of the line, and I only write of the things I saw." The battle was as evenly fought as any he ever saw. "If it had been two men wrestling, it would have been called a 'dog fall.' Both sides claim the victory—both whipped." But it's the night before that steals the story. "I stood picket in Perryville the night before the battle—a Yankee on one side of the street, and I on the other. We got very friendly during the night, and made a raid upon a citizen's pantry, where we captured a bucket of honey, a pitcher of sweet milk, and three or four biscuit." The citizen, it seems, had conveniently left town. "The old citizen was not at home—he and his whole household had gone visiting, I believe. In fact, I think all of the citizens of Perryville were taken with a sudden notion of promiscuous visiting about this time; at least they were not at home to all callers." The next day the war stopped visiting and started fighting. Marching through a cornfield around noon, the 1st Tennessee was hit by artillery fire, crossed a stream, and was ordered to attack at once with vigor. In front of them stood the Federal main line — "four Napoleon guns poured their deadly fire" from it. Watkins's regiment walked straight into it: "Eight color-bearers were killed at one discharge of their cannon. We were right up among the very wheels of their Napoleon guns." Their lieutenant colonel shouted to charge and take the guns, "and we were soon in a hand-to-hand fight—every man for himself—using the butts of our guns and bayonets." "Such obstinate fighting I never had seen before or since," he writes. "The guns were discharged so rapidly that it seemed the earth itself was in a volcanic uproar." By nightfall neither side knew who had won — and neither, by Watkins's account, had either of them. "I do not know which side whipped, but I know that I helped bring off those four Napoleon guns that night though we were mighty easy about it." Sources: Sam R. Watkins, "Co. Aytch" (1882), chapter "The Battle of Perryville" — all quotes verbatim Photo: "The Battle of Perryville, Kentucky, Fought October 8, 1862 — Sketched by Mr. H.
