@builderbrigade: I intentionally made the decision to put the shower niche on the exterior wall. We had it in our last house in GA and had no issues.
Ideally a 2x6 exterior wall would have made the situation way better. I probably could have furred out the wall to give us some more room for insulation, but I don’t want to make the shower any smaller than it is now.
I’m sharing these little details as I come across them in real-time on my renovation. It’s the whole reason I made the checklist, so many things to remember and they’re wayyyyy cheaper to change during the planning stage.

I'd bump out the exterior wall on the lower half, giving room for niches below and a ledge all the way across at whatever height you want.

Double up that wall. In existing wall will be insulated, the interior wall will have the niche.

No windows in showers... You'll need tempered glass and in non-tropical climates, the shower will never feel warm in winter as the window will radiate cold into the room. I would put the shower on all interior walls because even a well insulated exterior wall will radiate coldness into the shower. Then if you put a niche on an exterior wall, reducing the insulation that'll add to the coldness of rhe shower. You can add electric heat strips in the showers tile, to offset the coldness, but that adds costs and complexity to the build not to mention added heating costs.

I love a shower niche that you can’t see. I also hate showers that are all glass, it’s like showering in a fish bowl, only need a glass door or just upper shower glass.

Make the wall thicker so you can insulate behind the niche.

Windows in showers are dumb. Never worth the long term headaches. But you can just put corner benches to solve issue. There’s also no issue with putting a niche on the same wall as a shower.

Where are you living that you are worried about the insulation value of a niche that is going to have hardy backer, mud, tile and grout?
