If you grew up around Upper Marlboro, Croom, Marlton, or Southern Prince George’s County, you probably know Frederick Douglass High School. But the story behind that name goes way deeper than a school building. Before Douglass became a high school, Black students in Prince George’s County had limited opportunities beyond elementary school. Some had to leave the county just to continue their education. Then local Black leaders raised money, land was donated, a school building was moved—and in 1923, Marlboro Colored High School opened. Students traveled miles to get there. By 1935, it became Frederick Douglass High School. And for generations, it became more than a place to learn. It was sports. Dances. Proms. Rivalries. Teachers. Friendships. Community. All while segregation still shaped everyday life outside those walls. The school eventually moved to Croom Road, but the legacy never really moved on. So the next time you pass Frederick Douglass High School… remember what it took to create it. Parents sacrificed. Teachers built. Students traveled. And an entire community decided their children deserved more. That’s not just school history. That’s Prince George’s County history. #PrinceGeorgesCounty #UpperMarlboro #PGCounty #MarylandHistory #BlackHistory
