The last time Via Rail bought a new fleet, the trains came from Siemens and were assembled in Sacramento, California. The next ones will be built in Canada, for the first time in forty years. On 3 September, standing on a factory floor in Thunder Bay, Mark Carney announced that Alstom, the French-owned company that bought Bombardier's rail business, will build 313 passenger cars for Via Rail for $4.7 billion. About $4 billion is for the cars and nearly $700 million for fifteen years of parts and support. Carbodies will come from La Pocatière, Quebec, final assembly will be in Thunder Bay, and design and engineering will be in Saint-Bruno-de-Montarville. It came a week after Trump's message to Canadian business.
"Let all Canadian Companies that are doing business with America move to the United States, immediately… When you move back, there are no TARIFFS!" A 50% tariff on Canadian cars, trucks, auto parts and steel takes effect on 1 January 2027. The trains are badly needed. The cars on Via's long-distance routes average 77 years old: the typical one dates from 1949, the year Newfoundland joined Confederation. On some of those lines, including the one to Churchill, there is no road, so the train is the only way in or out. The order covers nine car types, including sleepers, dining cars and domes, for eight routes serving close to 400 communities, from Halifax and Gaspé to Churchill, Jasper and Prince Rupert. Alstom expects up to 670 direct jobs, drawing on more than 900 Canadian suppliers, with Canadian steel in the structure. Ottawa puts the economic benefit at over $1.6 billion. With July's $1.95 billion for 45 hybrid locomotives and a Montreal maintenance centre, federal rail fleet renewal now tops $6.6 billion. There are real objections. The first cars won't arrive until 2031, and the order runs to 2035. Buying Canadian usually costs more than buying from the lowest bidder, and taxpayers pay the difference. And a contract this size took years to put together, so it wasn't a reply to a social media post. Alstom employs 5,200 people in Canada and is the last passenger train manufacturer still building here. #canada #canadanews #TrumpNews #tariffs #fyp
