In 1997, Guo Gangtang’s life changed forever when his 2-year-old son, Guo Xinzhen, was abducted near the family home in Shandong, China. The child was later trafficked and taken to another province. Guo could have stayed home and waited for news. Instead, he climbed onto a motorcycle and began searching for his son himself. For the next 24 years, he traveled roughly 500,000 kilometers, or about 311,000 miles, across much of China. He handed out missing-person flyers, rode with banners showing his son’s face, spent his savings, went into debt, and wore out around 10 motorcycles. There were false leads, long roads, and years with no clear answers, but Guo kept going. Along the way, his search became bigger than his own family. He became an advocate for other families looking for missing relatives and helped connect people with information and support. His story became so widely known that it helped inspire the 2015 film Lost and Love, starring Andy Lau. Then, in 2021, everything changed. Police located a 26-year-old man in Henan province who was working as a teacher. DNA testing confirmed that he was Guo’s missing son. On July 11, 2021, Guo and his wife were finally reunited with him after nearly a quarter-century apart. Twenty-four years of highways, flyers, uncertainty, and persistence led back to the one thing they had never stopped hoping for: their son was alive, and they could finally hold him again. Sometimes hope is not loud. Sometimes it looks like getting back on the road, day after day, even when you have no idea how long the journey will be.
