ONYX • PART 1 🐴 | There's a reason I'm trimming this big guy in his stall… Meet Onyx, one of the draft horses I work with at HomeFarm at Undermountain Road in Lenox, Massachusetts. ❤️ Onyx requires sedation for his farrier appointments, but we've learned something important about working with him: his environment matters. Out in the barn aisle there's more light, movement, people and activity happening around him, and he tends to come out of his sedation much faster. His stall gives us a quieter, more controlled environment where we can work with him more safely and efficiently. That's something worth remembering with ANY horse. Farrier work isn't always about making the horse fit one particular routine. Sometimes you need to adjust the routine to fit the horse standing in front of you. In Part 1, I'm working through Onyx's front feet and talking you through what I'm seeing and what I'm doing as I trim. With a draft horse, I'm still evaluating the same fundamentals—hoof balance, hoof wall, sole, frog, growth and wear patterns, breakover and how that horse is loading each foot—but there's a whole lot more horse attached to that hoof. 😂 And sedation doesn't automatically make a difficult horse an easy horse. Good handling, positioning, communication and knowing when the horse needs a moment are still incredibly important—especially when you're underneath a draft horse. Regular draft horse hoof care matters too. Staying on an appropriate farrier schedule helps control excess hoof growth and gives us an opportunity to keep watching for changes before small hoof problems become much larger ones. Today we're getting those fronts taken care of. ✅ PART 2 → We head to the hind feet. Onyx lives at HomeFarm at Undermountain Road, where I have the privilege of caring for the feet of quite a few of their horses. If you've enjoyed meeting Onyx and would like to learn more about the farm, follow their work on Facebook. And for anyone who would like to help support the care of Onyx and the other animals who call HomeFarm home, you can learn more or donate directly through their website. ❤️ https://www.homefarmundermountain.org Follow along for more draft horse hoof trimming, draft horse hoof care, sedated horse trimming, horse hoof problems, hoof balance, farrier work, horse hoof health, rescue horse care, regular hoof trims and equine education. #farrier #drafthorse #hoofcare #farmlife #equestrian
