Al Bano (Albano Carrisi) was a working-class farmer's son from Apulia with a soaring operatic voice. Romina Power was Hollywood royalty—daughter of actors Tyrone Power and Linda Christian. They met on a movie set in 1967, married in 1970, and became Italy's ultimate golden couple. By the late 1970s, they began recording exclusively as a duo, combining Al Bano’s vocal power with Romina’s softer, international pop sensibility. In 1981, songwriter Cristiano Minellono teamed up with composer Dario Farina (who wrote hits for Ricchi e Poveri). Rather than crafting a complex heartbreak ballad, they set out to write an unpretentious anthem about finding happiness in everyday moments—a glass of wine, a pillow fight, a handwritten note, or a late train. Farina structured it over an upbeat synth-pop arrangement, tailor-made for European radio. In February 1982, the duo took "Felicità" to the Sanremo Music Festival. Though it came in second place (losing the official award to Riccardo Fogli’s "Storie di tutti i giorni"), "Felicità" completely stole the spotlight: It became the night’s clear crowd favorite and an instant radio sensation across Europe. The performance solidified their image as the quintessential happy, united Italian couple—a persona that resonated deeply across the continent. The song went on to sell millions of copies worldwide. Re-recorded in Spanish as "Felicidad", it dominated charts across Latin America. For over a decade, "Felicità" stood as a anthem of joyful domestic life. Tragically, the couple's fairytale public image broke down years later following the disappearance of their eldest daughter, Ylenia Carrisi, in 1994, leading to their ultimate separation in 1999—making early '80s performances of the song a nostalgic snapshot of their peak era together. The track topped the charts in Italy and achieved massive longevity in DACH markets (Germany, Austria, Switzerland). In Germany, it spent 40 weeks on the single charts, peaking at No.6. By mid-1982, the single had sold over six million copies worldwide, earning multiple gold certifications and cementing its status as one of the best-selling Italian singles in history. To capitalize on Romina Power's multilingual abilities and Al Bano's passionate vocal style, the duo recorded a Spanish-language version titled "Felicidad." The track became a dominant radio staple across Argentina, Mexico, Spain, and Chile, helping the pair sell out stadium-sized venues throughout South and Central America during their 1980s world tours. In Eastern Europe and the Soviet Union, Italian pop held a unique status as permitted, uplift-focused Western entertainment. "Felicità" became a massive cultural phenomenon across the USSR, Romania, and Poland, making Al Bano & Romina Power household names behind the Iron Curtain. Modern Pop Culture: The song remains the definitive audio shorthand for romantic Italian nostalgia, appearing in film soundtracks (such as the 2009 film Lourdes), European commercials, and modern dance covers. #MusicLovers #Alex -n#Music 👇 Follow for your daily music dose! - @alex_trian
