A Little Life, and from everywhere. And I have no qualms about saying that 😅

I don't know that I'd ban any books. I don't think it's effective. You have to fight dangerous ideas at a deeper level.

This takes me back: in a college world religion class, we had to argue what the world would look like without the (Christian) Bible. So surprising that half the class settled on the conclusion we’d be better off as a society today without it having existed, and the other half found it too foundational to our culture. Food for thought!

Oh I would DEFINITELY ban books 😈. In all seriousness, I see your point that making My Struggle by Hi***r unavailable to elementary kids (or as many ppl as possible, tbh) is probably a good move.

I think words should mean what they mean. I get irritated by the word “banned” when what we really mean is restricted. They’re not the same. For instance, Stephen King is often seen as an author who has faced banning; ironically, the only book by Stephen King I don’t have access to is the one King himself chose to make unavailable.

I appreciate your balanced video. I worked at an Ivy League library for 14 years. Everybody is guilty of wanting to eliminate or control certain books based on their personal beliefs and preferences. And you are right that certain books don’t belong in the hands of certain groups, ie children. It’s just an area where people disagree. But we should disagree respectfully and try to be open to other peoples perspectives.

I like the idea of “ personally banned books”. I don’t like the book, then I don’t read it. I don’t like the Author, I don’t read the Author’s books.

Is this a safe place to ask if we can ban a few authors instead?? 😏 (Kidding, kidding)

I don’t know. It has never occurred to me to want a book banned. In fact, if people I disagree with want to commit their drivel to paper, the easier the debate. Other books often need to be viewed in context with when they were written; then they become a historical artifact. Scared people ban.

I don’t think we should ban or restrict any books from public libraries to avoid slippery slopes. The problem appears when children have access, and their parents don’t want them exposed to certain content. And no one can agree on what’s reasonable in that context, since everyone has their own values. Right now I’m leaning towards letting parents create their own deny lists they can give to the library, and their kids can’t check out those books. But anyone else can. But even then, many parents want to deny those books from *other* people’s children too, which is ridiculous.
