When you said “hakunamatata” I got really worried this was just a very long dad joke, and I will have not actually learned anything.

Wait... wouldn't they call it something to do with Ryukyu? Strange that they don't include the kingdom name when referring to the language.

that made sense. another analogy: hearing a Scottish person speak Scots as an English speaker is difficult, but if I'm very careful, I can parse out what they're saying. however, I'm gonna miss a lot, and there's no way I can speak Scots back to them without learning a whole new set of words and sounds. in the same way Scots isn't English, Okinawan isn't Japanese. I think I get it

I've heard that "ne" is kind of like adding "innit?" or "eh?" to a sentence. Is "sa" similar? It doesn't seem like it's a clarifying question in this context.

Is this like a region vernacular change in that country? Like for us in the US it’s the difference between northern, Southern, and Western areas. Like Yall, you all, you’ns, etc?

❤️the “linguistic talk”. Icelandic has a similar phrase: “þetta reddast”, which means roughly “this will sort itself out” (as in: “don’t worry about it.”) As the designated worrier, it irks me. 😆

It reminds me of the difference between English and Jamaican English than English versus German tbh

How much Uchinaaguchi do you speak? As you know it was dying out until fairly recently. Did you study it specifically or did you just pick it up from the older generations?

How mutually intelligible are Japanic langauges?? Like is it 80% you can make it work? Or like 40% its a different language but it's got enough similarities that you can understand when theres a miscommunication? Or 10% its a brand new thing 😂

So the とう (can’t make the u little on my keyboard) “tu” is an Okinawan syllable? Are there many syllabic differences? I’ve studied Japanese on and off since middle school, majored in it in college, and never learned anything outside of the standard 日本語.
