Yes, people with hEDS can have joints that bend, pop, sublux, and dislocate…but hypermobility exists on a spectrum, and not everyone looks obviously “loose.” In fact, many people with hEDS are incredibly tight. Why? If a joint isn’t providing enough passive stability, the muscles around it often compensate by staying switched on. Over time, that constant muscular guarding can create significant tension, pain, and stiffness. I see this especially around the neck and upper shoulder girdle, think the suboccipitals, cervical paraspinals, upper traps, and levator scapulae, and in the pelvic floor, where overactivity can develop as another way the body tries to create stability. So when evaluating someone for hypermobility, don’t just look for what moves too much. Look for what is working overtime to stop that movement. Sometimes the biggest clue to underlying hypermobility is actually how hard the body is trying to hold itself together. #mcas #heds #dysautonomia #hypermobility #mastcellactivationsyndrome
