As a western guy who lives in china, yea its exactly like this. I pay like 30 dollars a YEAR for my vpn and it never shuts down (its a chinese vpn) theres no way china isnt letting it slide on purpose

The government just turns a blind eye - if you do something wrong, they won't bother with you. The last time I used my phone's data to access some websites through a VPN, two days later the police called me and said I had visited a phishing site, warning me to be careful and never transfer any money.

Tbh the only reason im on youtube and tiktok is for learning English, douyin and bilibili are way better in terms of entertaining content (cuz both youtube and bilibili have plenty of content like uni courses)

Yeah no, I’ve talked with Chinese guys in China they know what is google and YouTube but they just don’t need it, everything in China is “better” in sense that it’s for China, YouTube TikTok etc they have their own and even better. I use douyin now and then it has a shop and everything.

this isn't just a China thing btw. every country engages in some form of internet restrictions for one reason or another. the most obvious example for people in the West are streaming services like Netflix having movies in some countries but not others. the service of getting around geo-restricted content is one of the main things marketed by VPN companies. movie companies don't like this because a lot of the time they want to make money by getting local distributors to pick up their movie, but they don't go after it unless it affects their bottom line too much, and most paid VPN services don't affect that too highly.
