Same thing happens at the bowling alley I work at. Decent but small selection of beers we sell for the sailors and customers, but we close by 8. Usually retired people or sailors new that give me trouble for saying last call by 7:30, but I've had a few regulars who asked for beer still cause they're always there.

I used to bartend in a small village bar (think Cheers type atmosphere) and my trick was to turn off the jukebox, leave from behind the bar and stand by the door, then yell "time to say good night"! then I'd hug or high five everyone on their way out and thank them for coming. For some of my customers, they'd stay til close just because it was the only hug they got all week. (it wasn't creepy, just either really nice & happy way to end the night or a little sad to realize how lonely some people were)

It feels like humans are devolving. Wherever my husband and I become regulars somewhere, they love us. Often the chef or owner will make sure to stop by and thank us, as if we are VIP. We are just basic humans with manners, nothing special. It really makes me question how bad other tables are!

Even working 2am closing in a bar, with a 1/2 hour grace period and light up full, people would argue at 2:30 they didn’t wanna leave. Like seriously, ‘you don’t have to go home, but you ain’t staying here’!
