You'd already overlooked things, tried to keep the peace, and given them plenty of chances. Once you finally spoke up, they called you dramatic, told you it wasn't that serious, or made you feel guilty for bringing it up. Now you're defending your right to be hurt instead of having an actual conversation about what happened. That's how blame shifting damages communication. The original behavior gets pushed aside, your reaction becomes the focus, and accountability never happens. Eventually, trust starts disappearing because every attempt to resolve something becomes another argument. Healthy relationships need room for uncomfortable conversations. Nobody gets everything right, but taking responsibility means listening, understanding the impact, owning your part, and changing the behavior that keeps causing problems. Then comes the accusation that you've changed because you don't stay quiet anymore. Maybe you're just recognizing a pattern you spent too long excusing. You weren't asking for perfection. You wanted honesty, respect, and a willingness to work through problems without being punished for bringing them up.

I spent three hours carefully planning and rehearsing my words so that he wouldn’t feel attacked and get defensive. Sometimes, that worked a little. I really needed him to hear me. I’d been choosing silence so much more often through the years. This time was important. I felt like I had some answers that could really help us. I was feeling hopeful, again, but this time, it was different. I felt like I was at my end. So when I was done speaking, as kindly, gently and emphatically as I could he deflected, made excuses, blamed me, made accusations, denied and defended and slept on the couch and in the morning he told me he didn’t deserve to be spoken to like that. So I haven’t spoken to him again except for when I asked him to move out. I’m so relieved now and at peace
