Most doctors hope for a second opinion request from demanding patients or from google doctor-patient. Trust me, the won’t be offended. Many doctors secreting hope that the patient goes elsewhere.

I worked with general surgeons. Many women with breast cancer wanted second opinions. Our policy was to be generous and helpful. I would build up the new provider. I would give them the name of the doctor I would go to and who the men would send their wives to. Sometimes they came back to us. Fortunately, it wasn’t about ego. The MDs genuinely wanted them to get the treatment they needed.

As an oncology nurse practitioner, I second this. At my clinic, we implore you to get a second opinion. A, because that’s what you want. and B, because that’s your rights. Most of my patients who have ever gone for a second opinion have come back.

My medical oncologist sent me for a second opinion because he wanted a trusted thoracic oncologist he knew and OSU tumor board to review my case before starting me on his own board approved treatment plan. And ultimately OSU disagreed with him, and he was perfectly fine with that and stood by their recommendations and is still my local oncologist because I really trust someone who truly seems to want the best for me and not just the best for their ego. Great doctors are out there!!

absolutely 💯. I have AL Amyloidosis, a rare plasma disease, cousin to multiple myeloma and treated like it. it's a. infiltrative disease. destroyed my original heart. got the gift of a heart transplant. my hematologist/oncologist thought she knew best. wasn't interested in consulting any other hemo's . I consulted with a global thought leader (who i saw while getting the new heart) and she had a different opinion. hematologist here (my home) may have 300 patients, only 2 of us are heart txp also. the global thought leader has at least 2000, at least a few hundred that also are heart txp patients. I think I'll go with who had much deeper experience and is considered the western US expert and a global thought leader

I started referred to hem/onc went thru various work ups, they say no cancer then they say different cancers then I end up no cancer. Ok. Rhum sends for iron, dr says why are you here your fine no reason to be here. I said check recent referral. Ok you will get 1 time shot.. again fine then the infusion center scheduled me for 5 days of multiple hour infusions. I’ve developed into such a complex patient I have zillions of specialists, no quality of life and after so many doctors dismissing me before hearing my case or reviewing my file is heartbreaking ❤️‍🩹

So true I had one when I asked him about at my new scan it showed like a lump by my thyroid he said I am your lung doctor not thyroid reach out to your PCP . So never seen him again !
