The classic hymn “Come Thou Fount” was written by a man named Robert Robinson in 1757. His life didn’t begin as hymn writer. Far from it. When he was young, his father died and without social support in England he was forced to grow up quickly. He went to work, but soon fell in with the wrong crowd. Robert roamed the streets on London with a gang of troublemakers. One evening, the group decided to visit a church service featuring George Whitefield. He was one of the most famous and accomplished preachers of his time. Robert and the gang thought it would be hilarious to make fun of the people at the service. He received more than he bargained for as he heard Whitefield share the message of Jesus. Within a short time, Robert became a Christian. Later, he wrote this famous hymn. What an amazing story of change, but it wasn’t the end of Robert’s story. He later wandered away from God. Robert ran to that deep, dark place that feels as far from God as you can get. One day, as he was traveling in a stagecoach, he sat next to a woman who struck up a conversation. She had no idea who he was, but she began to tell Robert how much the hymn “Come Thou Fount” had encouraged her. He desperately wanted to change the subject, but she kept talking. Finally, she asked him if he liked the song. Robert replied, “Madam, I am the poor unhappy man who wrote that hymn many years ago, and I would give 1,000 worlds, if I had them, to enjoy the feelings I had then.” Without missing a beat, the woman replied using lyrics from his song. She said that the “streams of mercy” are still flowing. Robert came back to the Lord. #ComeThouFount #StreamsOfMercy #ProdigalHeart #FaithStory #Redemption #ChristianHistory #JesusChangesLives #HymnStory #GeorgeWhitefield #GodNeverGivesUp #DevotionalThoughts #ChristianEncouragement #GraceThatRestores #WanderingHeart #FaithfulGod #GodsMercy #FaithJourney #GodStillMoves #ChristianInspiration #HymnHeritage #ChristianTok #ChristianCreator #behindthehymns
