@i.see.her_: When I was delivered the news of my little brother’s death, the words that made me realize he had died were, “He was like your twin. Be strong. When you survive, we will continue to see him through you.” In the days that followed, I received calls reminding me to be resilient and strong. I have never really understood how I earned this reputation. Before losing my brother, most of the challenges I encountered were things I could explain, rationalize, or find ways to navigate. I stood up for myself when necessary and did things that any ordinary person would do. Somehow, these became evidence that I was exceptionally strong. But I had never experienced death before. Losing my little brother was my first encounter with a loss of this magnitude, and nothing I had learned about navigating life prepared me for it. I cannot stand up against death, reason with it, or find a way around it. There is no solution I can work toward that will bring my brother back, and there is no amount of resilience that can change what happened. So when people remind me how strong and resilient I am, I sometimes wonder what they expect that strength to accomplish in the face of something I cannot change. I am not trying to emerge from my brother’s death stronger than ever. I am trying to live with the reality that he is gone, and sometimes, I need someone to recognize how unbearable that is instead of reminding me how capable I am of surviving it. #GriefJourney #SiblingLoss #LivingWithGrief #TheBurdenOfBeingStrong #GriefSupport
