Last week, the Marine Mammal Stranding Program- MMSP @UNCW MMSP - held a training necropsy of an Atlantic common dolphin (Delphinus delphis). AND IT WAS SO COOL!!! 😎 Personnel from the Lowcountry Marine Mammal Network @LowcountryMarineMammals, NOAA, and UNCW’s Chemistry Dept. were in attendance. There were over 6 undergraduate interns, 8 graduate students, and 7 post-grad students (working or volunteering). This training allowed students to learn necropsy techniques and skills that are difficult to develop elsewhere. Everyone who attended had hands-on experience and learned about standard necropsy reporting, biological abnormalities, parasites, veterinarian procedures, tissue assessment, sampling, and preservation, and active collaborations. We couldn’t have done this without our outer banks colleagues at NOAA for providing the specimen. UNCW’s MMSP plans to host two more training necropsies like this one for UNCW students and volunteers this upcoming year. Learn more at MMMSP here: https://uncw.edu/research/major-programs/marine-mammal-stranding/?utm_source=mmsp&utm_medium=301&utm_id=REDIR1 and about the Lowcountry Marine Mammal Network here: https://www.lowcountrymarinemammalnetwork.org. To report a marine mammal stranding IN WILMINGTON, NC: call MMSP’s stranding hotline at (910) 515-7354.
