No wonder I’m still struggling after 8 years out of the church. Left at 27, I’m now 35. I’m just starting to truly rebuild now.

I’m right there now. Restabilizing. No motivation.

You say people need to rebuild from the ground up, and this was literally my experience. my ability to connect with nature through gardening helped me rebuild after religious deconstruction.

This makes SO much sense! I used to be Mormon, and when anything bad happened in the world I would rationalize it, saying god has a purpose, there’s always a reason. When I left, I had to face the very negative realities of the world. It was so difficult to grapple with.

I deconstructed before the word became popular. I was excommunicated for it by the church I grew up in. Grace Baptist Church excommunicated me. GRACE excommunicated me 😅😂😭💀

Excellent description. Having to work my way thru the experience alone took a lot longer than I expected. Much better now

I’ve gone through this process over a 20 year period. It’s very painful, but I finally found a place of personal peace in uncertainty and impermanence.

I would add the assumption ‘I matter’ to the 3 you mentioned. It differs from the others by focusing on what I do.

As an existentialist I have never believed 1 or 2 and those are opinions (no way to prove or disprove). 3 is also an opinion but it's completely self-determined, you either embody worth or you do not. Up to you.

i genuinely don’t understand what it means to “be worthy”. how can someone who has never experienced love, meaningful connection or good fortune feel worthy?

I think what's interesting is that, at least for me, the grief/spiraling phase did not hit right away. There was a several years' delay
