Ask for depth of field in the particles. That's what makes them look filmed: 1. One THREE.Points with 20,000 particles spread around the camera. 2. A ShaderMaterial. In the vertex shader get the depth: -(modelViewMatrix * vec4(position, 1.0)).z 3. blur = abs(depth - uFocus). How far each particle sits from the focus plane. 4. Out of focus gets bigger: gl_PointSize = (2.0 + blur * 8.0) * (300.0 / depth). 5. Bigger also gets fainter: alpha = 1.0 / (1.0 + blur * blur). Skip this and it looks like snow. 6. Draw each point as a soft disc with gl_PointCoord and smoothstep. 7. AdditiveBlending and depthWrite: false, so overlapping light adds up. 8. Two warm colours only, gold rgb(255, 181, 71) and amber rgb(200, 116, 42), picked per particle at random. 9. Move uFocus with scroll. The focus racks from the dust to the object, like a real camera.
