@vincentsanderson: An invitation shouldnt just tell people when to turn up, but it should also tell them why they should turn up. If you want people to contribute in meetings, make two things clear: 1️⃣ The value they bring - What insight, experience or perspective do you need from them? 2️⃣ The value they will receive - What will they leave with—clarity, a decision, useful knowledge or support? “Please attend” gives people a slot in their diary. “We need your perspective on this, and you’ll leave knowing that” gives them a reason to engage. #leadership #management
I can’t think fast enough to contribute fully in the meeting, some people need time to digest

Often I find the loudest voices in the meeting are actually the least useful. Just because you’re not competing to be heard doesn’t mean you don’t have value and can’t follow up later.

The main problem is that proper minutes of meetings aren’t usually distributed to those who should be aware of discussions and decisions. If that problem was solved then people wouldn’t need to attend.

project manager here. a successful meeting when giving stakeholder updates is when the pre gathered details from smes is sufficient and they don't have to speak. the agreement I have with my team is I will get all of the answers in preparation for the meeting. I will invite you to the meeting and your attendance is optional, but your availability to answer questions if they come up is mandatory.
if a line of questioning is going down a path that is beyond what was discussed in our internal alignment. I don't expect my engineer to have been on the call, but I expect him to be aware that the call is happening and if I send him a text message he will respond or is able to join.
I'd rather my engineers be working than sitting on calls to stroke egos

yes they do need to be there. because people are lazy and dont read. or claim to be busy and hence cannot read emails. when I tell them during meeting, the information gets to them and they can give the feedback. even if they dont say anything, they can still think about it and might use the new info to create something new.

I stopped getting as frustrated by the futility of the regular team meetings when I realised their function is the performance of hierarchy.

Fyi- I quit one job when my manager who initially included me in regular senior strategy meeting to let me observe and learn later excluded me. I felt like company is not investing in my growth and decided to explore my options. So I’d recommend to check if it’s not something developmental or actually retaining the employee- the cost of replacing me was significantly higher than keeping me there

You're missing a key point - if they have the power to say no and didn't object in a meeting that they attended it is far harder for them to do so later.

they need numbers, that's it. and most of these meetings is to pretend they are busy doing "stuff "
