Coasting in neutral to save fuel? It's actually doing the opposite 🤯⛽ This is one of the most common driving myths in the UK, and loads of people were taught it by parents or older drivers. Coasting in neutral to save fuel? It's actually doing the opposite 🤯⛽ This is one of the most common driving myths in the UK, and loads of people were taught it by parents or older drivers. Here's what's really going on 👇 🔧 WHY NEUTRAL USES MORE FUEL When you knock it into neutral, your engine still has to keep itself running, so it keeps burning fuel just to idle. But if you stay in gear and simply lift off the accelerator, almost every modern petrol and diesel car cuts the fuel to the injectors completely. It's called "deceleration fuel cut-off" – the wheels keep the engine turning, so it uses next to nothing. Watch your live fuel economy readout next time you roll down a hill in gear and you'll see it 👀 🛑 WHY IT'S RISKIER TOO In neutral you lose engine braking, so your car picks up speed faster downhill and your brakes have to do all the work. On long descents that can overheat them and make them less effective. You also can't accelerate out of trouble straight away because you have to find a gear first. Holding the clutch down counts as coasting too! 📖 IT'S IN THE HIGHWAY CODE Rule 122 covers coasting and warns that it reduces your control of the car – less engine braking, speed building quickly downhill, heavier use of the brakes and worse steering response on bends. ✅ THE PRO METHOD 1. Lift off the accelerator early when you see you'll need to slow down 2. Stay in gear and let the car slow itself 3. Change down as the revs drop 4. Only dip the clutch just before you stop, so you don't stall That's free fuel savings on every hill, every roundabout and every red light you roll up to 💷 Did you get taught to coast in neutral? Do you still do it? Be honest in the comments 👇 And send this to the person who taught you 😂 Follow @carowl for more car tips that save you money 🦉 #carowl #cartips #carhacks #drivingtips #ukcars
