On August 12, Amazon-owned streaming platform Twitch announced they created a toggle so that users could opt out of allowing Amazon to train generative AI off of their content. The announcement sparked major backlash as: 1. Users question how long Amazon has already been collecting data for and 2. People are unaware that the feature is on by default, allowing Amazon’s AI to use “streams, VODs, clips, stream chats, and pictures and text on your channel” without consent. Twitch’s head of community, Mary Kish, stated that Twitch’s official channel would be set to opt-out, and later showed users how she disabled the feature on her personal channel. Twitch’s head of product, Mike Minton, admitted that if users could choose to opt-in “nobody would opt-in. That’s the honest answer.” HOW TO OPT-OUT OF AI TRAINING ON TWITCH: Open Twitch in app or on a browser > Find and click your profile icon > Navigate to Settings > Click on the Security and Privacy tab > Scroll to the bottom of the page > Uncheck “Training for Generative AI.
