I explained this to my mom when she was like “Why can’t this homeless person just walk into McDonald’s and ask for an application?” And I was like “because he doesn’t have a house for the required address. He probably doesn’t have a phone for them to contact him. He doesn’t have either of those so he probably doesn’t have a bank account. He probably doesn’t have interview clothes, etc” and she was just like “….I…never thought of it that way”. Yeah. You made that pretty clear.

I just had to get steel toe shoes for a new job that I start Monday. almost $100 gone. dude that left me with barely any grocery money for my kids. I'm gonna go sell my plasma to make up for it. this is awful

I was arguing with someone who said she was homeless and was able to get her life together but left out how she had a bf and a car that was there the whole time helping and she couldn’t comprehend that when your homeless no house no car no shower no clothes there’s litrally no job you can get you need programs to help these people so they can get back in

Meanwhile every single one of them has a phone and the Internet. It’s priorities. When I was first starting out I did not have cable TV, or phone so that I could afford gas and clothes for work.

Haircuts and grooming supplies. Paper to print a resume. There’s a lot that goes into being a functioning member of society that a lot of people don’t think about. Hunting for a job while living in a tent before the age of smartphones taught me a lot.

There have been times in my life where even working two jobs, I’d have to call out because I couldn’t afford gas to get to work. Poverty creates spirals - you never recovery because you’re still damaged from the last calamity.

The best analogy I’ve seen is that a rich person can afford a $100 pair of boots, those expensive boots last let’s say 3 years. A poor person can only afford a $50 pair of boots that last maybe a year. The poor person ends up paying more money than the rich person because they can’t afford large upfront costs.

At my old job a woman was told to leave while she was waiting for her interview with my boss all because she “ looked homeless” and my boss at the time said “ good we don’t need people like that here” how are they supposed to get jobs if they are turned away at the door?

Anybody tried filling out an application lately for just about any job on the planet you need a cell phone need access to Internet. You need an email account that you can check regularly. You need to have an address and then if by miracles of miracles somehow you have all of that then you actually get an interview you have to have a way to shower and get clean clothes and get to the interview and if you do all of that and you spend all of those resources that you may not actually have doing that you still will probably get ghosted because about 90% of the jobs are just going to be like well. We aren’t actually hiring at this time. We’ll keep your application on file🙄

I once had to quit my job as a CNA because I was so broke I couldn't afford my CPR training card. The cheapest I found for my CPR/BLS was $75 and I didnt have it

and if the job pays in direct deposit and youre homeless, youre screwed because you need a home address for a bank account. so they need under-the-table income in cash. and how do you even save enough cash to pay for a home when youre homeless? be so fr that cash is going towards food to keep you alive and then getting stolen out of your backpack by the next morning

I had to stop working my weekday shift at my second job because my car stopped working and I have to borrow my aunts, who also works. I don't have money saved because I live paycheck to paycheck and I don't have any credit to qualify for a loan of any kind to even try and get a new car.

there's places that donate clothes including suits and ties and blouses for people looking for a job. theres also ways around not having an address, like getting a po box(yes costs money, but is much cheaper and more accessible then trying to buy or rent a place to live). you can get a basic phone and phone line through financial assistance. you can also use a public library to set up an email address for yourself. is it hard? 100%. but it is possible. all that said it shouldn't have to be this hard.
