When I ask people to accept Adonis, I’m asking them to see the whole little boy in front of them. The boy who loves his ducks. Who has his own interests, preferences, and personality. Who deserves adventures, connection, and opportunities to enjoy being a kid. And the boy who needs very substantial support throughout his day. All of those things are part of his life. Adonis is autistic, non-speaking, and has real challenges that affect how he communicates, navigates busy places, handles transitions, and stays safe. Recognizing those needs helps us support him. Recognizing his joy helps us get to know him. I want people to make room for both. Acceptance means talking to him directly, even when his response looks different from what you expect. It means understanding that his headphones, AAC device, and safety wagon help him participate. It means being willing to adjust a plan, offer a quieter space, give him more time, or ask us what would help. It means keeping the invitation open, even if we sometimes have to leave early or say, “We can’t manage that today.” We are working every day to help Adonis communicate, learn, feel safe, and build skills. Alongside that work, he deserves to feel welcome as he is right now. He shouldn’t have to hide his needs to be included. And our family shouldn’t have to pretend everything is easy for people to recognize how much we love our life with him. Please take the time to know him. Learn what makes him smile. Notice what interests him. Respect what feels difficult for him. There is a whole person behind every diagnosis, and acceptance becomes meaningful when it changes how we treat that person. Adonis belongs—with his personality, his joy, and his support needs. 💙 —The Ridgeway’s Journey Share this with someone who wants to understand what acceptance can look like in everyday life. #autism #autismawareness #autismacceptance #autismmom #fyp
