I do this as well. chocolate in the tampon box so the husband and kids don't eat them.

My dog does this as a rule. Chihuahua. Put a blanket or towel under her bowl and she will cover it with that. Then u can save it for later. Works for me.. good luck!

She’s trying to hide it so nobody else takes it, just like how dogs bury their bones. She may or may not want it for later but she wants it hidden

She’s definitely hiding it for later, she’s planning for food insecurity. I’ve had a couple of dogs that do this. I try to just pick up their bowls the second they start burying it so their brain can learn to break the habit. It’s probably just an automatic thing for her atp

Self preservation. Food scarcity causes this behavior and it can last for the rest of their lives in some cases. Smaller meals, more often helps along with reassurance. Toss a few little snacks her way too. We called them just because snacks. It's helps build not just trust but reassurance there's always food.

I rescued a dog who and been found starving on the streets, he had very strange behaviors, ate slugs, worms, and poop. vet told me to always have food out and available at all times so he would learn he nolonger needed to do that. 2 years and he never did stop. starving to near death has strange life long effects.

I’d put out alternatives to dirt/wood chips. Something that won’t ruin the rest of the food. Cut up card board shreds, shredded washcloths, etc. (even rub them in grass or mulch for scent). At this point it’s an instinct to save her food due to insecurity. After 13 yrs in rescue my recommendation is to not try to change her (could create worse insecurity/guarding) but to instead decrease the damage, so to speak. Some dogs are just quirky. 🤷🏻♀️

My dog hides everything too. He's in a house with other dogs and he's the smallest of them. ( there was 3 - 1 of the other dogs has crossed the rainbow bridge recently) . I feed him a bit less so he finishes the plate in one sitting. Now he hides his chewy toys and bones .... everywhere. I can't tell you how many times his toys get washed as his favorite hiding spot is my dirty laundry pile 👍

Dogs that have lived on the streets for a while do this. It's a way of saving food so nobody else gets it.

She’s full and she’s saving it for later my rescue dog when I would give her a treat if she wasn’t into it she’d take it into my backyard and bury it that doesn’t happen anymore a year and a half later, but I’m sure that’s what’s going on with your puppy?

Farm dogs sometimes do this. They put hay or straw over the remaining food to keep the flies away.

I’m not sure if it’s possible given the amount of dogs you have on your hands, but I found feeding smaller meals more frequently helped my street dog stop doing this. Also separating at meal times could help, but again not sure what space you have for that purpose

my dog woodrow does this. I got him from BARCS in Baltimore. he was starved and my vet said he was trying to save for later. he even would hide his treats outside in the bushes and dirt. I then had to make sure to feed him inside

One way to deal with this is to give the food indoors and put a blanket close by so she can bury the food with the blanket and not ruin it. I saw this solution with one dog in his forever home. They just let him cover the bowl with the blanket, then went and took the bowl and cleaned the blanket. It took time, but gradually he learned the food kept coming, so the covering started to fade too. Maybe one corner on the bowl, then he just "dug" the blanket some after eating.

Yes. All my starving rescues do this when I first get them. It's them saving for later so they won't have to starve again. Poor baby. [Twin hearts]

My own personal dog did this. I cut her portion size down and she stopped. Mostly because she started finishing the amount I gave her. She’s definitely saving a snack for later. Kind of like burying a bone.
