@emchenhair: Don’t get caged into thinking that all layers are the same. I like to separate the interior of my haircuts into 2 main zones: ABOVE the widest point (orange in this vid) Hairs snipped in this zone create movement & lift bc of where it’s growing on the head. BELOW the widest point (depicted in blue) This zone contributes greatly to the structure, strength & density of the perimeter. Since it’s below the widest point, it just drops from the head, creating more of a stationary strand, unlike the section above where it tends to move around as the head moves. None of these examples are “right” or “wrong”, they just do different things & it’s nice to keep that in mind when working w/different types of hair. Or don’t. Like dude idk 🤷🏻♀️ do whatever you want. I’m not your boss.
the visuals are just chef’s kiss and actually makes me understand cutting SO much better, bless you 🙌🩷

Wouldn’t the layers make the hair thinner? Because if all the hair (like the orange) was the same length as the blue it would appear thicker no? I don’t know I’m just a high schooler😭

This only works for people with medium to thick hair. If your hair is thin, then you dont have a lot of hair to layer. And it still makes the ends appear thinner because the top isnt there to cover it the ends.
(I am not saying you cant do layers on thin hait and make it look good. But I feel like this video is over simplifying it quite a bit.)

Emily, I love your videos but the hairline, the ear area and the hair just behind the ear need more attention to detail than this flat lay visually creates. This oversimplification is going to create holes girl.

I'm not a hairdresser. It's like being a sculptor but with a floppy, flowy medium

I remember wanting layers or scene hair as a teenager and being told my hair was too thin for it

This is not for the ladies with 5 strands of hair like me, any kind of layering whatsoever and my ends are way to thin and wispy
