@kpixtv: San Jose residents paid an average of $1,416 for water in 2025, a 163% increase from a decade earlier, according to a national study by nonprofit advocacy group Food & Water Watch. The study found that water bills across 500 of the nation’s largest community water systems rose by an average of 62% over the same period, as utilities face aging infrastructure and climate-related challenges. Researchers also found that privately owned water systems charged an average of $823 annually in 2025, $329 more than publicly operated systems. I’m all for equity in basic services. But somewhere as rich as the Bay Area needs to invest in desalination plants. Sierra Nevada water should be for sierra residents, and valley farmers. Same as LA taking water from the eastern sierra. All those rich people living in coastal cities gotta pony up for desalination plants so that farms and aquifers through central California can get what they need. Especially as climate change accelerates
