@dilaudiddaddy: Utah now lets AI write your first prescription. 🤖💊 Since October 5, adults in Utah can scan their face in an app, get an acne severity score, and walk away with a prescription. No office visit. $4.99 a month. Until now, AI in Utah could only renew meds a human had already prescribed. This is the first time AI diagnoses and starts treatment. #anesthesia #healthcare #medicine #nurse #healthcare
My husband is a retired pharmacist, he’s been saying AI is going to replace pharmacists completely for some time. Robotics are already filling the scripts. Makes sense, less overhead, lower insurance, less/no mistakes, no bad attitudes. It’s actually an opportunity for creative development.

As a nurse, this was frightening to hear- then you made the point of the sandboxing expanding and where the line is in 5 years…that is legitimately concerning. Psych meds, CNS depressants or stimulants, meds that have to be in a therapeutic range that are being taken by a confused patient or a non compliant patient…who monitors or orders the labs for those meds (like Coumadin…lithium…depakote, etc) or patients who don’t recognize side effects/mood changes that end up being serotonin syndrome. Meds that can have a decrease efficacy or increased risk for toxicity from taking with certain supplements, herbs or other medications or freaking grapefruit juice. Some things must be assessed/reassessed/addressed by a HUMAN that I can’t see AI being able to ever replace. I say this knowing that these things already happen without AI, but damn…hope that made sense!

Do you think ai has to take an oath saying do no harm and have an ethical conscious to back it up? It could easily be programmed for preferences towards certain companies or drugs outside of what drugs may actually may be beneficial towards the patient.

Are patients notified that their refills and or prescriptions are AI generated? Can they refuse or is it automatic? can they exercise a right to see an actual provider?
That’s nice actually for simple stuff and will truly lower healthcare costs

I'm happy for a doctor to write a prescription. We need better pharmacies ever since covid. They've all gone downhill

Hmm why doesn't ai make it so health care is just built into inflation cost and their is no Medicare, Medicaid and health care needed to pay additionally. That's the ai we should be pushing for them to build. If they want to make a machine to help pharmacist. The pharmacist needs to make sure the meds are still right and any mistakes taken care of for us. More tests need to be built into the system.

Epic is populating AI generated summaries for the handoff report. I’ve already found errors. For example if a physician says that something is recommended in their h&p, AI might say that it already occurred when it hasn’t. There will be too many errors. Well, at least at the beginning.
