More than four in five U.S. physicians work for hospitals or other corporate entities, according to a Physicians Advocacy Institute analysis conducted with Avalere Health. Its latest figures show 59.7% employed by hospitals and health systems, while 22.3% work for other corporate employers, including insurers and private equity firms. The shift also extends to ownership: hospitals and corporate entities control 63.9% of physician practices. Between January 2024 and January 2026, another 48,100 physicians became employees of these organizations.
