@that.labor.nurse: Imagine going through childbirth in excruciating pain… only to wake up with absolutely NO memory of it. 😳 It was called Twilight Sleep, and for decades, women were given a combination of morphine and scopolamine during labor. The drugs didn’t eliminate the pain—they could erase the MEMORY of it. And what happened behind those delivery room doors is one of the most disturbing chapters in childbirth history. As a labor and delivery nurse, I think every woman deserves to know this part of our history. Because understanding where we’ve been helps us understand why informed consent and patient advocacy matter so much today. Did you know this was once considered modern maternity care?! 😳 #TwilightSleep #ChildbirthHistory #LaborAndDelivery #MedicalHistory #WomensHealth
I was born in 1971. I asked my mom about my birth story. She said “ I was asleep and woke up with a baby” 😳 I had no idea this was something common that happened.

I have a question? How do they get the baby out of the mom if she is in a complete sleep? Wouldn’t she have to crown to get the baby out so does the OB/GYN pull the baby out as a mom is in this twilight sleep maybe that’s what’s wrong with us Gen Xers today

So that’s why older women say “you don’t remember labor, so you can have more kids”

had my oldest daughter in 1977, they gave me twilight, didn’t really explain what it was going to be like. I didn’t know I had my baby until about 2-3 hours later and was horribly sick. Had 2 more babies after that and refused meds, never wanted to go through that again. and btw - I remember pushing my baby out and nothing else.

My mother requested it in 1968. She woke up 10 hours after I was born. She couldn’t nurse me because the nurses said I was a lazy baby and wouldn’t latch. I wasn’t lazy. I was sleeping off the drugs they gave her.

Mama told the story of when my Sister was born (1970) and all she knew was that this woman kept Screaming and Screaming and Screaming….and then the nurse started slapping her face saying “Honey you are gonna have to stop that Screaming” 🤣

My mom always told me the story about waking up to find out she had a baby girl! (1965). I’m so happy to say that I remember everything from the deliveries of my three children!

That may have been my Mom. She had for children. Makes me think of the Madmen episode when Don Draper’s wife had her last baby.

My mom always told me she doesn’t remember having me that she was asleep. But she never had a C-section. I was born naturally. So I guess this is how it went.

My mom had 5 kids 1955-1961. Knocked out. I was born 1962, breech, nothing for pain. My mom was SO mad because she got duped with the first 5 babies and said natural birth was so easy.

I was born in 1966.. my mother was given twilight sleep. My grandmother said it was horrific to watch. I was breech and she said they tied my Mother down to the bed because she looked like a wild animal.

My grandma said she had that medicine when she gave birth to my dad, but by the time she had my aunt they weren't doing that anymore in the town that they lived in. She said that while it was nice to "be asleep and not feel the pain" she preferred knowing what was going on. She also actually had fewer complications after my aunt was born as compared to when my dad was born.

I was born in 1974. The dr told my mom when he can in to check on her the next day “you damn near tore up a $5,000 OB table.” This went on well past the 60s

Mom remembered something: the pain. She started labor on Thursday & and me Saturday. They kept her on the Twilight Sleep stuff. She said she was confused but she still remembered the pain later. When I had my babies I refused anything.

I wonder how many mothers found it hard to bond with their children beacuse they couldn’t remember the birth and thoses early presious moments were effected since both mom and baby where kites in the sky

When was this? My grandma had twins (the first was breech) and she said after baby 1 was out, they knocked her out for 11 minutes and then she pushed out baby 2. She doesn’t remember much
