@theamericasforgotten: In a quiet farming valley in Norway, lights have been appearing in the sky for more than forty years, and scientists who have gone there to explain them are still working on it. 🌌✨ It began in earnest in late 1981. Residents of Hessdalen, a valley of only a couple hundred people, started seeing bright shapes above the hills, sometimes fifteen or twenty times in a single week. Some hovered in place for over an hour. Others shot across the valley at tremendous speed. They showed up white, yellow, and red, in summer and winter, above the ridges and below them. Researchers arrived with radar and cameras in 1983, and in 1998 an automated station was installed to watch the sky around the clock. The lights are less frequent today, but the instruments still record them every year. 📡 Plenty of ideas have been put forward. One suggests burning airborne dust rich in a rare metal found in the valley. Another proposes that the rock on either side of the river, combined with sulfur in the water, turns the whole valley into a kind of natural battery. Nobody has been able to reproduce the lights or confirm a cause. It may be one of the few mysteries where the evidence is plentiful and the answer is still missing.
