i mean you said it yourself, you havent used an eyelash curler in a long time, you have to squeeze harder and pump it multiple times, and as you do that do further up to the tips of the lashes, it will curl it much better and evenly from the bottom to the top. i do mine likd that and it takes me less then a minute in total, depends on how used you are to it
