This fitness and health journey has been one of the hardest parts of powwow season. If I’m being real, I do eat those road trip foods. I do. Sometimes it feels like I’m on vacation, and it’s easy to grab the fries, burgers, pizza, or whatever is available. I’m not going to pretend I eat perfectly because I don’t. What I’m really trying to do is find balance. When you’re traveling 8 to 11 hours on the road, it’s easy to eat whatever is available, and a lot of those options are breaded, fried, or just not the foods that help me feel my best. I try to make healthier choices when I can, but there are definitely days where I eat more than I planned. I’m learning not to beat myself up over it. The guilt still creeps in, but I’m reminding myself that one meal doesn’t erase all the progress I’ve made. I’ve noticed that I feel my best when I prioritize high protein meals, complex carbs, and healthy fats. I’m especially thankful we have our travel trailer because we can cook healthier meals instead of relying on fast food all weekend. I’m also grateful that many of the hotels we stay at have gyms, and this year I packed my dumbbells and resistance bands, so I have no excuses. Even if I can’t get to a gym, movement still counts. A quick bodyweight workout at camp, push ups, squats, lunges, side lunges, planks, or a walk, is better than doing nothing at all. In past summers, I would usually stop working out altogether until powwow season was over. This year I’m choosing a different approach. It may not be perfect, and it may not look like my normal routine, but consistency is more important than perfection. I’m giving myself more grace. This season is about finding balance, building healthier habits that fit my lifestyle, and remembering that every healthy choice, whether it’s a protein packed meal, a workout at camp, or simply getting back on track after a fast food meal, is a step forward. Progress isn’t ruined by one weekend. It’s built by showing up again and again.
