I got mine to start picking up his right lead after hours of lunging on a line (just halter and line) keeping steady pressure for the first few times on the line then under saddle in the beginning required a round pen and a mechanical hackamore or a bosal he wouldn't for a long time pick up a right lead if he had a bit in his mouth(nor would he slow down easily with a bit come to find out he has tmj disorder im not sure if that affects leads or not but he's got cleaner right lead since getting the tmj adjusted more often)

Pick up that inside and sit on your outside. Ask around circles/turns. Also, body work (even if its not primarily a pain issue, getting rid of as much tension as possible will only help).

You can try a full cheek (make sure you put on the bit keepers or it won't do anything), they are my favorite for starting OTTBs. They are great for just making sure the aids are a little more clear. Also leg yields are great, if they are struggling with the right lead, ask them to yield off your right leg, to help shift the weight off the inside leg, just to make it a little easier. Lunging is also great, just have them pick up the right lead for about 10 strides, then trot until they are balanced, then ask for the canter again, and repeat over and over. Lots and lots of transitions both in the saddle and on the lunge line to help build some balance. Leads can be hard for some horses, so don't get discouraged!!

My horse had a problem with a lead too. The way we worked through it is I canter her on her side that the lead is correct, then get off after doing that for a minute or two, then lunge her going the other way at a canter (the lead she struggles with). If he gets it correct, then release the pressure and stop for the day. If he doesn't get it correct, slow him down to a trot, then speed him up to a canter in an attempt to pick it up again until he gets it correct. If he gets it correct then slows down again to a trot on his own, push him into it again, forcing him to hold it for a little longer. Then release the pressure when he gets it correct. A little later, when she figured out that it gives her more balance, she would be able to get it on the first or second try. What can also help later, when they figure out balance, is using a dressage whip, and giving them a little bit of pressure from behind to figure out the balance and what they need to do.

Hold that outside rein and outside bend in a corner then ask right away. So the only option is a right lead since outside shoulder is blocked

this quarter horse I’m currently riding is HORRIBLE at getting his right lead but recently we found his new knack for it! Squeeze like 3-4 times with your right leg then once with ur left. It may not work for everyone and that’s okay, it’s just what works for me.

My mare struggles too, granted she’s green. I had to teach the sidepass and get her confidently doing it at the walk and trot as well. She started picking it up in a week and holding it, but struggling becwuse she’s weaker to her right. Howver she somehow can lope on her left lead and side pass to tbe right at the same time.. I slow and ask again and she picks it up. Pic of my favorite horse ever

Some do better at first if you counter bend them into it. Outside hand outside leg. And then over time as they build strength and start understanding, you can decrease the severity of the counter bend when you ask

Ask in a corner and shift your weight!! Ottbs are taught lead changes on the track by shifting your weight

my guy used to physically not be able to pick up his right lead! Go across the diagonal at a working trot and right before you hit the corner ask while he’s turning. He should slowly get better at it!

Pick it up on a circle and yield out, asking for the transition during the yield, make sure to still have solid outside aids so he doesn’t run out the shoulder, he’ll get stronger as time goes on!

NB :
*considering your saddle fits and is sound* half halt with outside rein, left rein in this case, or even bend to the outside while asking. This will stop the outside leg from coming forward for encourage them to pick up their right lead.

lots of lunging to in larger circles. it gets her used to the feeling of the lead and makes her more confident with picking it up in the arena

I ride a horse just like this and the only way I ever get it is bending her and swinging my leg exaggerating far back 😭

Have a very strong outside aids because typically they won’t pick up a lead because they’ll just run through the outside

Pick it up on a turn or circle! In the walk and trot work on bending around the inside leg.

My horse is like this to. use your outside leg and hold your inside rein ether up or out. it also helps if you keep your hand wide. thats how i always got his right lead. and also dont go from the trot. ether a walk or a halt.
I have a horse like this take your outside leg and side it back and squeeze then take your inside leg and tap

If you have a round pen, work on cantering around, cut across the middle, hard right hand, nice hard right leg (or however hard the horse needs) and he will pick it up. Keep practicing lead changes like that

At my barn we had this ottb (is probably much older but still) and he was really bad with one of his leads but I can’t rlly remember which one. But anyways, all we did was pick up our inside hand and really encourage the canter only with the outside leg. Hope it works!

I found that putting a pole on the ground tall enough that they have to jump slightly really really helps, lope them over it going left or right and they pick up the correct lead!
