@punchsucks0: The difference between Punch and Otome's early interactions with their keepers speaks volumes. Watch how Punch's keeper lingers, seemingly waiting for him to seek attention, while Otome's keeper allows her to develop independence without encouraging unnecessary human attachment. I've said it before, and I'll say it again: I believe Punch's dependency on humans was reinforced by the very people responsible for helping him integrate. How was he supposed to learn to rely on his troop when human attention continued to be encouraged? His struggles today didn't develop overnight. We need to examine what behaviors were being reinforced from the very beginning. #PunchTheMonkey #Otome #MacaqueBehavior #PrimateSocialization #MonkeyTroop
This video fails to mention the biggest difference in these two, is that one is female vs other is male. That plays a big part.

This comparison says it all. Otome was allowed to become a macaque, while Punch was turned into an attraction and conditioned to run to keepers instead of learning how to navigate his own species. The keepers set him up to fail.

I find it funny they call you out on being critical but those same people refuse to read anything AZA or EAZA ethical code related, heck ANYTHING primatology related 🤦♂️ethical animal husbandry standards exist FOR A REASON! The zookeepers are supposed to be neutral but for some reason decades of primate research doesn’t apply to them. It’s honestly sickening we get a real time Harlow experiment that they’re using as a merchandising tool to sell his face on everything from stamps to a literal biography. What’s worse is by the time he isn’t young and cute anymore and the public moves on it’ll be the same outcome like the multiple other failed hand reared macaques if not sooner. Half a million gone towards crowd control and tubes? What a joke.

They reinforced that bond from the very beginning; Shikano was even amused when Punch climbed all over him, and they never set any boundaries. I’ve said it ad nauseam: he always behaved like a spoiled child. Those caretakers didn't act professionally; Shikano took his role as a father figure very seriously, and now there are consequences. Otome, on the other hand, always kept a respectful distance from her caretaker, which was key to her independence. That is why, by the age of nine months, she was already eating and sleeping with the troop; she won over the alpha male and gained the protection of a female because she understood boundaries she allowed herself to be taught and guided, respecting the macaque hierarchy. At seven or eight months old, she could be seen grooming the alpha for minutes on end; there is footage of it! She was much smaller than Punch and very intelligent.

The zookeepers let their personal feelings and connection with Punch interfere with their job. It’s one thing to love the animals you care for, it’s another thing to develop a bias and give preferential treatment to the one you care the most for. Also, I’m in the minority, I never found Punch cute. He always had an ugly old man face 😂😂 Otome and Ryu though were adorable. Ryu got his name because of his unique dragon-like eyes while Otome had a shy, but respectful and confident demeanor in her behavior which made her adorable.
