@losangelestoday: The Port of Los Angeles is putting up to $4 million toward the Freedom of the Seas Park and Pavilion at the Battleship IOWA in San Pedro, money the Port says comes entirely from its own revenues with no taxpayer contributions. After clearing the Harbor Commission on August 27, the deal went to City Council, the last approval it needs. The pavilion is a 17,500 square foot visitor, community and education center with room for 550 people and an entrance shaped like a ship's bow; the park adds veterans memorials, public art, an Honor Walk and two Brown Water Navy boats. The museum is targeting a 2027 opening for the pavilion and 2028 to 2030 for the park. The ship itself is the "Battleship of Presidents": in 1943 it secretly carried FDR across the Atlantic, and his bathtub is still on board. ——— Why It Matters 🏛️ A 17,500 square foot pavilion for education programs, ceremonies and a veterans resource center 🌳 A new waterfront park with memorials, public art and an Honor Walk 💵 A roughly $17 million project backed by the Port of LA and a $6.7 million state grant 🛳️ The Iowa is home to the National Museum of the Surface Navy ——— The Details 📍 250 S Harbor Blvd, San Pedro 🗓️ Pavilion targeted for 2027, park 2028 to 2030.
