Wow. It’s hard to see how this doesn’t hurt us 30-40 years from now

swe is dying I got laid off. 20+ years of experience, computer engineering degree, multiple patents, went back to Linux admin and networking, and only build for myself. the craft computer science is by in large automated, and not nearly as interesting. at this sr that doesn't matter if your laid off.

i don’t understand how people see the progress of AI and think senior devs are somehow special and AI won’t get to their level. At this point its almost head in the sand stupidity

They are also looking a lot of ML engineers and the interview is only on systems engineering, cloud deployments, and micro services. No one has a clue what they want or need.

Lol Ive said this all along, AI cant advance bc humans are always the bottle neck. Im in fed gov.. we see it first.. Its common sense, AI output vs Human Processing Brain.. what's the goal? Burn out humanity? Complete BS.. imo

If you are majoring in computer engineering, I would recommend that you also take classes in the humanities/communication. It won’t be enough to be technically savvy. You will have to be able to be articulate the technical picture as well as the anecdotal narrative.

Yep. Senior Dev here. Literally just retired a month ago. We had become an AI first team. Everything you said was starting to happen. They hadn't started downsizing, and have no current plans to, but I see it coming. They are going to cry big tears though, when all the ai companies start charging the price of a junior dev for each agent they use, so they can try to finally turn a profit. I didn't want to be a part of all that.

My team migrated from selenium to playwright in two months. Would’ve been like 2 weeks if we had more tokens. Without ai that would have been on the back burner and probably taken a 6months to a year

What it seems that leadership is missing on this topic is the cleanliness of the code. My husband is a software engineer at IBM so he has a front row seat of what is pumped out of these AI agents. He sees it all as tech debt - every single line! While it might be fast, you can’t easily edit this code later so any new business requirements become a massive headache. It’s really all just poorly written spaghetti code.

Currently on a team of 3 devs. Our bottleneck is PR reviews. We have 1 senior, 1 mid, 1 junior. Literally discussed this today on how to best automate PR/QA because the output is crazy fast.

We need legislation to stop offshoring. I can't stand that my company which only does business in the US is hiring more and more people in India. Even for non tech roles now.

We are using Claude code right now. The problem is that once we give the requirements to Claude if there is something unclear it does not come back and ask questions. It just moves ahead with its own assumptions. This is dangerous. We can have Claude to generate unit test code, but bad assumptions means bad unit test cases. Dev is not a process of writing code, it is a process of requirements discovery, clarification, and decisions. How is Claude going to overcome that?

I see a future of very nuanced bugs. OOM, race condition deadlocks etc. Btw really wonder this trajectory when LLMs are no longer being heavily subsidized
