Dr. Stephen Kolakowski :
Good teaching point. Pitting edema is a finding, not a diagnosis, and the pattern matters. One-sided swelling can raise concern for venous obstruction or DVT, while swelling in both legs may reflect chronic venous insufficiency, medications, heart, kidney, or other systemic causes. From a vascular standpoint, I always want to know when it started, whether it’s one leg or both, and whether there’s pain, redness, skin change, or shortness of breath. The legs often give us important clues about what’s happening elsewhere in the body.
