DAY 18 | YOUR NEEDS MATTER TOO 🌿 There is a particular kind of self-abandonment that can look very responsible. You notice what everyone else needs. You remember the appointment. You notice who is tired. You know who needs encouragement. You anticipate the problem before it becomes a problem. You make sure everyone has eaten. You remember the birthday. You answer the message. You solve the issue. You adjust. You accommodate. You keep things moving. And somewhere in all that attentiveness, you stop asking yourself a very important question: “What do I need?” Not what does everyone else need from me. Not what would make the situation easier. Not what would prevent someone from being disappointed. Not what would keep the peace. What do I need? That question can feel surprisingly unfamiliar to a woman who has spent years being responsible. She may know how to identify a problem in a room before anyone else notices it, yet struggle to identify what is happening inside her own heart. She may recognize everyone else's exhaustion while calling her own exhaustion “normal.” She may encourage other people to rest while feeling guilty when she sits down. She may defend someone else's need for boundaries while feeling selfish for having her own. She may make room for everybody and then wonder why she feels like there is no room left for her. This is where coming back to yourself becomes very practical. Your needs are not an inconvenience. A need is not automatically a demand. It is not selfish simply because it belongs to you. And acknowledging a need does not mean that someone else must immediately meet it. It means you are willing to tell yourself the truth. “I need rest.” “I need clarity.” “I need help.” “I need time alone.” “I need honest conversation.” “I need financial information.” “I need more space.” “I need companionship.” “I need quiet.” “I need to learn something.” “I need to stop doing something.” “I need to grieve.” “I need to ask for support.” “I need to change something.” “I need to be honest about what is no longer working.” These are not signs of weakness. They are information. And information becomes useful when it is noticed, examined and responsibly acted upon. But here is where wisdom matters. Not every feeling is a need. Not every desire is a necessity. Not every discomfort requires immediate change. Sometimes what feels like a need is actually avoidance. Sometimes what feels like loneliness is a need for connection. Sometimes what feels like irritation is exhaustion. Sometimes what feels like “I need to leave” is actually “I need to have an honest conversation.” Sometimes “I need everyone to understand me” is actually a need for internal clarity. Sometimes “I need a new beginning” is really a need to rest before making a major decision. This is why self-awareness cannot stop at: “What am I feeling?” We also ask: “What is underneath this?” “What is this feeling trying to tell me?” “What kind of care does this situation actually require?” “What is mine to do?” This is mature self-stewardship. You are not obeying every emotion. You are not silencing every emotion either. You are learning to listen. #HarmonyHaven #livingconsciously #notice #yourneedsmatter #womenover40
