@fly2hvn: dark red came out in 2017 as a standalone single from steve lacy, a teenager from compton who was already playing guitar in the internet & making beats on his phone. no album, no big rollout, under three minutes long. it sounded like it was made in a bedroom late at night & sent straight out into the world, & that rawness is exactly why it stuck. steve was becoming known as the kid who could build full records with almost nothing, & dark red felt like the purest version of that idea: one guitar line, one hook, one voice that sounds close enough to be in the room with you. the whole song circles one worry, that something is coming to take someone away. the guitar is fuzzy, the drums are crunchy & his falsetto floats over all of it without trying to be perfect. it doesn't build to some huge moment, it just loops that fear until it gets under your skin. the same year he had his hands on kendrick's damn, co producing pride, which says a lot about how far a kid with a phone & a guitar had already travelled. years later dark red found a whole new life online, picked up by a generation that wasn't even listening when it dropped. by the time bad habit went number 1 in 2022, people were already going back to this one as proof he had it from the start. some songs get bigger the older they get, & dark red is one of them. raw, short & honest, & still hitting the same way #darkred #stevelacy
