@ksbw_8: The mother of a 14-year-old girl whose newborn was found dead near Moss Landing in August pleaded not guilty Thursday to charges related to her alleged conduct involving her daughter. Ofelia Garcia Ortega, 36, is scheduled to return to court Oct. 20 for a preliminary hearing. Prosecutors allege Garcia Ortega used falsified documents to have her daughter work in agricultural fields when she was 13, allowed her to drive without a license and kept her out of school for months. She faces two felony counts related to displaying or possessing forged identification, along with misdemeanor charges, according to the Monterey County Sheriff’s Office. The infant, known as Baby Angelita, was found dead along a roadway on Aug. 1. The baby’s mother, identified as Jane Doe, was 14 at the time and is considered a victim of sexual assault, prosecutors have said. At a Thursday briefing, the Monterey County Sheriff’s Office said investigators believe Jane Doe ran over the baby and that her parents did not know about the alleged killing. Investigators even believe that Jane Doe had tried to hide her pregnancy from her mother, according to text messages she sent her father. The investigation remains ongoing. Jane Doe’s biological father, Sergio Galvez Perez, has been charged with sexually abusing and impregnating her. He was arrested in Mexico, where authorities also located Jane Doe. She is in the care of Mexican child protective services.
