@barstoolpiff: Day one of the congo river basin is underway. Ash is on the Sangha River, paddling south from Nola in the Central African Republic toward Mossaka in the Republic of the Congo, where the Sangha meets the Congo. The full route is more than 700 km, about 434 miles, in inflatable kayaks, and he expects it to take three to four weeks. This is Mission 01 of Project 6. His day-one video, posted today, shows the launch under gray skies with local kids on the bank, then the team on murky brown water in red inflatable kayaks loaded with dry bags and water. The tracking screen at the end of that clip reads about 58 km in 8 hours 45 minutes, starting from Nola on October 8. His team posted a mid-day note from Matt: they had not heard directly from Ash or videographer Will since the night before, which they expected. Starlink only works once they stop and set camp, so footage lags. Garmin inReach still had them moving, roughly 35 km after about five hours on the water. The later video puts the day further along than that check-in. Getting to the start was already messy. A bag with the kayak pumps, tents, food, and water went missing in Cameroon and took two days to recover. Visas were refused at the first border because the paperwork was for flying into a city, not overland travel, so they rerouted and still reached Nola. He is not alone. A local guide and a UK videographer are with him. The kayaks can be deflated and carried if a stretch is safer on foot. The river has hippos and Nile crocodiles. The forest has elephants, snakes, and scorpions, plus malaria and dengue, and some sections are days from a doctor.
