From 456 nuclear tests to the world's emergency uranium 🇰🇿☢️ The Soviet Union carried out 456 nuclear tests in eastern Kazakhstan between 1949 and 1989. Local radio announced them next to the cinema schedule. In 1989 a poet helped start the protest on national TV. The test site closed on 29 August 1991, exactly 42 years after the first bomb. About 1,410 nuclear warheads were left in Kazakhstan. By 1995 every one of them had gone to Russia. Since 2019 the world's emergency stock of nuclear fuel uranium sits in Öskemen.
