@hospicenursepenny: No, I did not fact check if they are really illegal in the UK I just took that Hospice Nurse’s word for it. Don’t come at me if I’m wrong. This is really just a PSA for how to use a toothette #Hospice #HospiceNurse #Education
It’s true we don’t use those because someone choked we use these instead

Or my FIL fave vodka. 😁 He was near death and I felt bad that his mouth was so dry. So I moistened it very carefully with his fave vodka. And dabbed his lips and tongue. He gave me a half smile. Took a deep breath and reached to pet his deceased dog(which he'd been doing all that day) he then giggled and graduated this life. It was a sad but beautiful experience.

in the care settings I've worked in we tend to use these. there's nothing that can detach easily on these and they do the job really well.

We're not allowed to use them at my nursing home here in Canada anymore either for the same reason. I don't think it's flat out illegal, but my facility doesn't allow it. We have to use a bite block and a toothbrush as if that isn't way more tedious for everyone involved

The NHS no longer supplies them (they said it was due to a choke risk!? - more likely to be a cost cutting exercise sadly). We were advised to source them ourselves whilst my MIL was dying

We aren't allowed to use the pink sponge ones due to a dementia pt biting the sponge off and choking on it. we have a silicone brush style one that can't be bitten or ripped off easily.

I may or may not have used them to give a g&t or a glass of wine over half an hour to a dying person a little bit. By a little bit, I mean at least twice a shift lol. I liked doing it and they loved it.

we have a slightly smaller type, so if the sponge does pop off you wouldn't have the same aspiration risk, they're flatter and often come in presealed packets

They’re not illegal but are bad practice because someone choked when the sponge came off the stick. We use a soft toothbrush or a silicone type one these days :) [Twin hearts]

They're not illegal. Some hospitals don't use them because of the risk of the sponge coming off.
