My dad’s rent was 75$ and his wage was 7$/hour. He made his rent in a freaking day and a half.

GenX and in the 90s I was able to afford a car, insurance, a 1 bedroom apt, and go to college off of what I made delivering for Domino's. No way in hell you could do that now.

you could buy a 1969 Corvette ZL1 (the most expensive option which led to only 2 of them existing) for $11k and the base model was under $5k BRAND FUCKING NEW...you couldn't buy a used Kia soul for 5k today and that's insane 🙄

I had a huge blow up with my mother in 1995 about finances. I was complaining about daycare. She told me she afforded her mortgage, car payment, and bills on minimum wage and I was making double. I told her very loudly I was not going to leave my 4 yr old child at home alone all day while I worked like she did. We didn't talk for weeks after that fight.

Also the biggest stagnation in the rate of minimum wage increases began literally right after the boomers were old enough to have majority voting power in the USA, and the trend largely continued for the entire time that group made up the country’s majority voting bloc

im 36, it took me until my 30s to finally move out of my dads house bc the cost of housing in my small town exploded overnight. I was approved for a 2 bed/1 bath apartment for $875 a month in March 2021. I ended up not taking it due to a family crisis but was looking again a year later and the price had gone up to $1300. today that same apartment is up for rent at $1675 a month.... for years our town had 2 homeless guys & we all knew them. now theres homeless ppl on damn near every street corner, homeless families in parking lots, and nothing is being done about it.

I did the hourly math. If you worked every single day of the week and got 8 hours of sleep, you would only have 13 hours each week left over. That’s only 13 hours to bathe, cook, clean, visit family, visit friends, etc. Never mind if you have children. This means you only have 79 hours in one month to do everything you need to outside of work in order to survive off minimum wage. God forbid you get sick. That’s not feasible long term.

When I graduated high school in 1991, minimum wage was $4.25 per hour (in California). That fall the cost for community college tuition was $5.00 per unit, plus another $30-$40 in fees. Books added $150-$200. Meaning you could pay for a full semester of community college with about a week and a half of full-time work. You could easily pay for a full year with a part-time summer job. I'm Gen X, and I fully acknowledge that things were much more affordable at the time I was leaving HS. But the cost had started to drastically change by the mid to late 90s.

my dad always talked about working his way through college. eventually I looked up his college tuition for the years he was there and learned he needed to work about 10 hours a week for 52 weeks to cover his entire tuition for the year.
